A digital capture (who cares if it's digital)

ShangYang, China
I didn't notice the sunken boat when I was "working" the scene.  The sun was setting quickly in this narrow gorge and the shadows cast on each tree and boulder and over the lake was changing so quick I had to decide on composing different pictures upon each change in the angle of the sun.  I decide to include more lake in a picture and then saw this sunken boat amidst the fallen leaves.
These were only possible with the advent of digital -- I was able to be more generous with my capture. During that fast changing 10 minutes, I took about 60 shots.  With film, I likely would restrain myself to about 10 exposures (but then out of the 60 shots, many were insurance shots).  And back on my desktop computer, I was able to do a bit of tweaking to bring out more details with the boat, and later, I may put this to print with ease, not needing to rely on a lab to bring out the true colors and details.  This is definitely a time of possibilities.  It was more than 35 years since my last dark room session, and digital had revive the possibilities available to me when I had access to a darkroom.

  1. It is really a good picture!
I can see through the water! It will be much better if I can see shades of green on the mountain.

  2. I agree with you, this is really a scene requiring a much higher dynamic range. As I had commented in the post, it would even be more difficult with film -- I would have to nail the exposure exactly in order to fully exploit the scene. If I would redo the picture, I'll likely enrich the yellow in the brightly lit hillside, it's too light as is as I had exposed for the boat.
